Volunteering

So much of what we do relies on our volunteers. Consequently they are extremely important to us and we want them to enjoy the time they so generously give to the society.

There are various ways in which you could help, depending on how much time you can give us and what suits both your capabilities and most importantly your wishes as to how you would like to help. You’d be surprised at how much difference even a single hour per week could make to one of our members and how rewarding the experience can be.

If you enjoy driving and are confident enough to drive a 16 seater minibus, you may like to transport our members to our headquarters for activities or take them on outings in ‘The Yellow Peril’, our dazzling canary yellow minibus! We also need volunteer escorts to accompany the members while on the minibus and helpers for all of our clubs, classes, groups and meetings.

We have a team who regularly visit some of our members in their own homes and we also run a ‘phone pals’ scheme whereby a volunteer will telephone a member at the same time each week. For some you may be the only person they have regular contact with, so you can imagine the difference this could make to that person’s life.

Although we already have 60 volunteers on our books, we always need more to enable us to provide a better service and to reach a greater number of our approximate 600 membership.

So, would you like to make this sort of difference to a vision impaired person? Do you have some spare time on your hands, for whatever reason? Are you a friendly, caring person who likes to meet people? Well we are waiting to meet you. However much or little time you can spare you will certainly be providing a much needed and appreciated service, so please contact us for more details.

FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR MEMBERS, ALL OF OUR STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS ARE SUBJECT TO CRIMINAL RECORD BUREAU (CRB) CHECKS AND ARE ASKED TO SIGN CONFIDENTIALITY DOCUMENTS.

When I lost my husband I decided I had to become more involved with the Society and started attending different clubs and classes. It got me through the darkest of days, especially the regular visits by one of the charity’s visiting service volunteers.
