About us

Founded in 1913, Worthing Society for the Blind is a charity registered in England. Our Charity Number is 1078504 and we are a Company Limited by guarantee number 3818652.

Our aim is to assist wherever possible the Visually Impaired people (VIP) of Worthing. There are nearly fourteen hundred people living within the borough of Worthing who are registered partially sighted or blind.

After spending many years at Milton House, Nursery Lane, Worthing, we moved to our purpose built headquarters in Richmond Road in January 1994, although the official opening by the Mayor at the time, Councillor Brian J Lynn was not until some months later in August.

The Society is governed by a board of Trustees, two of whom are themselves visually impaired. They meet regularly to discuss all the business aspects of our Headquarters and any grant requests which have been received.

The Focus group was formed in January 2003. This group is made up of VIP who are taking on some of the practical issues that affect the daily life of visually impaired people in the town such as bus passes and pedestrian crossings. They are currently liaising with Worthing and Southlands Hospital regarding the possible relocation of the eye clinic.

Our Fundraising Group had its inaugural meeting in October 2004 and its aim is to put together a programme of events to raise money for another minibus. The group comprises of 4 Volunteers, 2 Trustees and 1 member of staff. Ideas for ways of lifting the Society's profile and raising money at the same time are always welcome.
